Lumian Gen AI Newsletter Issue #50

Salesforce AI Agents, Perplexity Ads, Google x Character.ai

Welcome to the 50th edition of the Lumian Weekly Gen AI Newsletter!

As I write the 50th edition of my newsletter, I find myself drawn to a rather deep question – one that cuts to the very core of our existence: In a world increasingly dominated by AI, what does it truly mean to be human?

For as long as we have existed, we have lived under the certainty that we are the dominant force on this Earth. Our religions placed us at the center of creation. Our philosophies told us that our reason, our creativity, our passion – these are what set us apart, what made us special. Our civilization, with all its wonders and flaws, is a testament to our unique ability to shape the world around us. And yet, as we stand on the threshold of a new era, an era shaped by AI, we are forced to confront a chilling possibility: that we may need to reimagine what it means to be human.

This realization unsettles me, more than I care to admit. It’s not the rapid technological advances that make me uneasy. It’s not even the fear that machines will outthink us, outcreate us, outlive us. It’s something deeper, more intangible – a sense of loss that tugs at me, quietly but persistently, as if something essential, something profoundly human, is slipping away.

There’s a beauty in our imperfection, in our fragility. We are beings of flesh and bone, haunted by our mortality, driven by a desperate need to find meaning in the brief flicker of time that we are given. We are not efficient; we are not always rational. We stumble through life, making mistakes, feeling deeply, yearning for connection. These messy, imperfect moments – the ones that make no sense on paper – are what make life worth living.

AI will never understand that. It may calculate probabilities and optimize outcomes, but it will never grasp the raw, unfiltered experience of simply being. It can write poetry, but it cannot feel the hope of a new beginning. It can compose music, but it cannot hear the soft notes of a lullaby and be transported back to the safety of childhood. It can generate images, but it will never stand in awe beneath a 2,700-year old Sequoia tree, feeling the weight of time pressing down, knowing that this moment – this fleeting, beautiful moment – will soon be gone.

I think about the small, unremarkable moments that fill my life. Walking through my local park at dusk, feeling the cool San Francisco air brush against my skin. Lying in bed at night, listening to the sounds of the city outside my window. The distant hum of traffic, the occasional chatter from passers by. Catching up with my friends and loved ones. Knowing that human connection, this fragile, transient connection, is what makes life meaningful.

AI cannot replicate these experiences. It does not know what it means to stand on the precipice of something new and feel the exhilarating mix of fear and excitement. It does not understand the existential urgency that drives us to create, to love, to leave something behind in the face of our inevitable end. It will never understand the yearning for something more, the drive to transcend our limitations, the need to leave a mark on this world – not because it is rational or efficient, but because it is what makes us alive. For all its power, AI is hollow. It may analyze data, predict trends, and solve complex problems, but it will never know the depth of a human heart.

In this new world, where AI continues to advance, we are faced with a choice. We can allow ourselves to be swept along by the tide of progress, losing sight of the things that make us human. Or we can hold fast to the beauty of our imperfection, the messy, chaotic, and deeply emotional reality of being alive. We can remember that our value is not in our productivity or our efficiency, but in our capacity to feel, to connect, to create something beautiful – not because we have to, but because we are driven by an unquenchable thirst for meaning.

What makes us truly human is not our ability to solve problems or achieve goals. It is our ability to feel deeply, to create meaning where there is none. It is the way we come alive in the quiet moments, the ones that are unproductive and inefficient but are filled with a richness that no machine could ever replicate.

In the end, AI will transform our world (I’ve spent the last year and a half writing about this!), but it cannot touch the essence of what it means to be human. We are beings of heart and soul, driven by a desire for connection and meaning. And that, more than anything, is what makes us who we are. It is what makes us human. And it is something no machine will ever truly understand.
