Lumian Gen AI Newsletter Issue #35
Microsoft’s Finance Copilot, Elon vs. OpenAI, Inflection’s New Pi
Welcome to the 35th edition of the Lumian Weekly Gen AI Newsletter!
This week we've just witnessed something akin to a teenager suddenly acing calculus after years of struggle with basic arithmetic. The latest brainchild of the AI world, Claude-3, has done the unthinkable by scoring over 100 on an IQ test.
Here's the kicker: AIs, like Claude-3, aren't "seeing" these patterns in the way we do. Instead, they're being described verbally, like telling a blindfolded person how to solve a Rubik's cube using only words. Previously, AIs would stumble through these tests like me through a dance class—awkwardly and with many missteps. But Claude-3, with its verbal walkthrough, turned the tables, achieving what's considered an above-average human IQ score.
As we pop the champagne for Claude-3's foray into the IQ stratosphere, it's worth pondering what this means for the rest of us mere mortals. Imagine, if you will, a future where your office's top analyst is an AI with a penchant for dad jokes and a mean streak in logic puzzles. That's right, Claude-3 is just warming up, and by the time Claude-4 drops, we might all be nostalgically reminiscing about the good old days when humans used to be the smart ones. So, let's buckle up and maybe start flattering our soon-to-be AI overlords with compliments on their impeccable logic. Who knows? It might just earn us a favorable spot in the brave new world where we go to AIs for life advice and not just the weather forecast.
As always, it’s been a busy week, particularly with the OpenAI vs. Elon Musk battle. But, we’ve got it all covered for you!

The 2-Minute Scoop to Keep You in the Loop
Microsoft has announced the launch of Copilot for Finance, a cutting-edge AI tool designed to streamline the complex and often tedious tasks that finance teams grapple with daily. This innovative solution, part of Microsoft's broader strategy to equip every business team with an AI assistant, promises to automate the intricacies of audits, collections, and data analysis directly within the familiar confines of Microsoft 365 applications like Excel and Outlook.
In a recent legal battle, Elon Musk has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, accusing the AI research company of straying from its non-profit origins to pursue profits, particularly criticizing its partnership with Microsoft. OpenAI countered by publishing emails from Musk that suggested a strategic shift away from open source was once considered acceptable. As the drama unfolds, it's clear this battle might just have more layers than an AI neural network, showcasing a billionaire's quarrel turned high-stakes tech saga.
Inflection AI, co-founded by Mustafa Suleyman of DeepMind and Reid Hoffman of LinkedIn, has launched Inflection 2.5. This new model promises near parity with GPT-4's capabilities, particularly shining in coding, mathematics, and general intelligence, while operating on considerably less power. Their AI chatbot, Pi, powered by Inflection 2.5, has gained traction with 6 million monthly active users and extended functionalities, including real-time web access and voice output, raising the bar for personal AI chatbots and possibly nudging competitors like OpenAI towards new releases.
