OpenAI Launches Sora, ChatGPT's More Memory, Cohere’s 100 Languages

Welcome to the 33rd edition of the Lumian Weekly Gen AI Newsletter!

If you haven't had the chance to witness OpenAI's newest creation, Sora, you're in for a real treat! Sora is this incredible tool that breathes life into static images and text, transforming them into vibrant videos.

So how does Sora work?

It’s a special trick called "spacetime patches." Let's say you have a movie reel of "The Dark Knight." A reel is like a long ribbon with a bunch of still pictures that make the movie when you play them fast. Now imagine you cut out a tiny piece from each picture, but always from the same spot, like taking a little piece of the Joker's laughing face or Batman's serious look, frame by frame.

When you stack all these tiny pieces you cut out, you end up with a little tower that sort of shows a mini-movie of just that tiny spot if you look at the edges. This "tower" is what the text calls a patch.

Sora treats videos like they're made of these patches. Just like GPT-4 can predict the next word in a sentence, Sora can predict the next "patch" in a video. So, if it knows how the Joker's laugh starts, it can guess how it will continue and create a video showing just that, just like how you'd expect the next words in a story to make sense based on the ones before them. It's like Sora is completing the story of the video, one little patch at a time.

With Sora's clever patchwork, our favorite scenes can now evolve in ways we've only imagined, crafting new narratives from the fabric of the old!

As always, it’s been a busy week, particularly on the funding side. But, we’ve got it all covered for you!

The 2-Minute Scoop to Keep You in the Loop

OpenAI just dropped a game-changer called Sora, an AI that's turning text prompts into jaw-dropping videos that are smooth, detailed, and last up to a minute! Sora enhances the capabilities of AI in filmmaking, offering detailed control over style, mood, and camera angles, and can also animate and edit existing footage. Think of telling an AI to produce a Pixar-style short directed by Wes Anderson, and Sora brings it to life. Get ready, because the way we think about video content is about to change big time!

ChatGPT is leveling up with a shiny new feature: memory! This means it can now remember the deets from your chats, making every conversation smoother and more tailored to you. No more repeating yourself or reintroducing your coffee shop to it for the umpteenth time. And if privacy's your concern, you've got control over what it remembers or forgets. This is still in the test phase, but imagine having a digital sidekick that gets you more with every chat. Big moves for businesses and power users, letting you zero in on the big picture while ChatGPT keeps track of the details.

Cohere for AI just changed the game with Aya, an AI that speaks 101 languages, breaking down the English-dominant AI barrier. Developed with input from 3,000 global researchers, Aya shines in understanding, summarizing, and translating languages, including 50+ underserved ones. Plus, they're sharing Aya's tech and data, opening doors for everyone to innovate. Aya's here to make global communication smoother and more inclusive, proving language is no longer a barrier in AI.
