OpenAI is discussing a deal that could value it at over $80 billion, a significant increase from its valuation six months ago. This move, led by Thrive Capital, could make OpenAI San Francisco's most valuable startup and one of the top tech start-ups globally, trailing only ByteDance and SpaceX. Only a select few companies, backed by substantial resources, expertise, and funding, are positioned to lead in this domain.

Anthropic was founded by ex-OpenAI researchers and has backing from Amazon and Google. Universal Music is suing Anthropic for allegedly copying song lyrics without permission and is exploring ethical AI use of copyrighted content. The case highlights the music industry's concerns about AI mimicking artists.

OpenAI discontinued its Arrakis model due to underperformance and the inability to achieve anticipated cost savings. This setback could potentially hinder OpenAI's pace, impacting its collaboration with Microsoft and leading to a pivot towards optimizing GPT-4. The challenges faced with Arrakis underscore the uncertainties in AI development, suggesting rivals like Google and Anthropic might soon narrow the gap with OpenAI.

🤖 The Foundation Model Transparency Index

Rating the transparency of 10 foundation models

In the rapidly evolving landscape of Gen AI, understanding and trust are paramount. Recognizing this need, a distinguished team of experts from Stanford, MIT, and Princeton have come together to launch the Foundation Model Transparency Index (FMTI). This innovative index provides a comprehensive framework, examining a sweeping 100 facets related to the transparency of foundation models. It delves into every corner - from the initial stages of how these models are constructed, to their functional mechanisms, and ultimately, their practical applications downstream.

The index measures 100 aspects, ranging from model development to its downstream use. When tested on 10 leading foundation model companies, scores were underwhelming, with the highest at 54 out of 100, and the lowest at 12. Meta's Llama 2 topped the list, while Amazon's Titan Text ranked last.
