Meta’s Celeb Bots, OpenAI’s Chips, US vs. EU AI Policy

Meta is doling out millions to celebrities like Snoop Dogg, Tom Brady, MrBeast, and Charli D'Amelio to turn them into quirky AI chatbot characters on its platforms. This move is Meta's flashy bid to lure folks into its digital domains, and while these star-studded avatars are currently text-based, they're set to find their voice in 2023. It's Meta's gamble to make the metaverse the new hangout spot, with a sprinkle of star power to sweeten the deal.

OpenAI is eyeing the creation of its own AI chips to address the shortage and high costs tied to the external chips currently fueling its software and products. Presently hitched to Nvidia's GPUs and Microsoft's partnership, the move towards in-house chip development aims to lessen the dependency and tackle the escalating costs associated with running power-hungry systems like ChatGPT. While this venture could ease the hardware cost burden, it's a hefty undertaking that could require a significant time and investment, with success not being a guarantee.

The US warned the EU that its new AI law could hurt small companies and slow down innovation. The US is also worried that the law focuses too much on how AI is made rather than the risks of using it, which might slow down AI development and investment in the EU. These concerns were shared recently, showing a difference in approach between the US and EU on AI regulation, and could impact how competitive the EU remains in AI technology.

Generative AI’s Retention Riddle

Despite a robust user interest, generative AI applications are facing a retention and engagement conundrum. While initial adoption sees a surge, the data from Sequoia Capital’s latest report reveals a stark drop with a mere 14% median DAU/MAU ratio, falling significantly behind mainstream apps like WhatsApp.

The crux of the issue boils down to proving value that resonates on a daily basis.

Generative AI is akin to an uncut gem, showing promise but requiring finesse to reveal its true value. The journey ahead is about chiseling away the rough edges to enhance user retention and transform these applications into daily essentials for consumers.
